Cycling & Hiking in the Harz Mountains

Would you like to spend an active holiday with hiking and cycling tours? Then the Harz Mountains with their countless hiking and cycling trails are just the thing for you. A well-signposted network of routes totalling over 8,000 kilometres makes the Harz one of the most popular hiking regions in Germany. With its scenic diversity, the low mountain range offers hikers and cyclists impressive views, beautiful fir forests and interesting sights. Whether ascents to one of the high peaks, walks through the long valleys or bicycle tours to the towns of the low mountain range – in the Harz, everyone will find a tour with the right duration and level of difficulty.

If you are planning a hiking excursion during your holiday at Drübeck Abbey, there are various routes that lead directly past the abbey complex. These include, for example, the Harzer Klosterwanderweg (Harz Monastery Hiking Trail), which leads from Grauhof Monastery near Goslar to Wendhusen Abbey in Thale. The easy-to-walk trail is 67 kilometres long with only slight ascents and descents. If you want to walk from Drübeck Abbey to Ilsenburg Abbey, a hiking tour through typical Harz mixed forest and past several ponds awaits you. The trail also leads along the Romanesque Road, which connects castles, cathedrals as well as monasteries and churches from the 10th – 13th centuries.

If you want to take a full-day cycling tour or a hiking tour lasting several days, you can take the tour around the Brocken. The route is 88.8 kilometres long and leads directly past the monastery. It is also possible to climb the Brocken directly from the monastery. You can do this via Ilsenburg on the Heinrich Heine Trail. It takes just under 4 hours to reach the summit of the mountain after about 13.9 kilometres. If you prefer to walk on more even paths, you can take various tours through the Ilse Valley.

The Hexenstieg (Witches’ Trail) is particularly popular among holidaymakers in the Harz mountains. This long-distance hiking trail leads over the Brocken and through the Harz National Park and enchants its visitors with breath-taking mountains, landscapes and forests. You can find more hiking and cycling routes through the Harz here.

Skiing in the Harz Mountains

Would you like to have an active winter holiday with skiing and tobogganing? Then you can reach a variety of ski areas in the Harz Mountains from Drübeck Abbey. As the northernmost medium mountain range in Germany, the Harz is very popular with winter sports fans thanks to its numerous ski areas, cross-country ski tracks and toboggan runs.

A large number of ski areas can be reached from Drübeck Abbey in just half an hour by car. These include, for example, the areas in Torfhaus, Sonnenberg, St. Andreasberg, Schulenberg, Braunlage and Altenau. You can find out about the current weather conditions in the ski areas here. Braunlage is particularly popular as the highest ski area in Lower Saxony. The 971-metre-high Wurmberg has 12 kilometres of longer-than-average pistes. The ski season begins here on 10 December and ends on 2 April. From beginners’ slopes to runs for advanced skiers and the Hexenritt slope for sporty skiers, there is something for everyone here. Tobogganers also get their money’s worth on the 1,600-metre-long fast toboggan run from the Wurmberg down into the valley. This can also be used in the dark thanks to floodlights, which is a special highlight for all winter sports enthusiasts. Snow tubing at the ski lift at Hexenritt is also very popular. There is also a ski jump with a viewing tower right at the top of the mountain. Braunlage can be reached by car from Drübeck Abbey in about half an hour.

Not far from Braunlage is the equally popular St. Andreasberg area with the Sonnenberg ski station. At an altitude of 870 metres, this is one of the three highest ski areas in Lower Saxony. The season starts here on 17th December and ends on 19th March. The area has three T-bar lifts and a pony lift. Snowboarders can use the “Sonnenallee” with various obstacles here; for skiers there are easy as well as difficult slopes. The snow tubing slope is located in the Teichtal. Winter sports fun for the whole family awaits you here. The skiing area can be reached from Drübeck Abbey within 40 minutes by car. But there is also a toboggan run in Ilsenburg itself for leisure sports enthusiasts in winter.

Furthermore, daily newspapers and information material on leisure activities in the region are available at reception and in the in-house information point. In addition, our reception staff will be happy to advise you on excursion destinations and sights in the Harz and help you plan excursions, cycling tours and hiking tours through the Harz. Tickets to our in-house events can be purchased at the Gardeners House.
